Shatner-ific!

I have a friend who is a Shatner fan. And, since I had time off today and nothing better to do, I compiled a few videos from YouTube in my friend's honor.

Enjoy!

Facebook - 2nd wave

So I thought my addiction to facebook had subsided.....apparently I was wrong.

I've heard it from many people, saying facebook was for those people who wanted to re-live their high school years. I didn't agree with them of course. I have many people on my friends list, and 99% of them were people I met after high school.

I went through the initial phase of facebook, where you are pretty much addicted, and are adding friends constantly, logging into see who you can find or who has found you, etc, etc, etc.

Once over, the addiction settles, and you start logging in once or twice a day to update a few items, check out a few things, and that's that.

I thought it would end at that.

But no.

Now it seems the high school friends are creeping into the picture. And I find myself with a renewed addiction.

I still disagree with those nay-sayers, I don't want to re-live my high school years. But catching up with friends from almost 20 years ago is very cool. Friends who fell through the cracks somewhere, but you always wondered where they are now.

I find I am now sending messages and having some great email-type conversations with these newfound old chums. And I don't see anything wrong with it.

Let the nay-sayers go on and on about facebook, I don't listen to them.

I think they are missing out on something fantastic!

And as always, here's a few vids:

Is Anybody Out There?

As a new blogger, I am likely going through what every other blogger has gone through in their own beginnings. Start posting things, try to hone your skills a little, start to your groove with the blogging, and ultimately wonder whether there is anybody out there reading your blog.

I find blogging very relaxing. And since my blog is about anything that strikes me at the time, it doesn't really fall into any particular niche of blogs. Personal blog I suppose would be the category, but since I blog anonymously, it's sometimes hard to personalize it enough. I think I've done an alright of it though so far.

Today I woke up, checked my blog (as I always do) to see if anyone left comments ( I also get a report from Sitemeter each morning of how many people visited my site).

So I looked at the little "comments" link below my last blog, and saw there was a number 2.

I blinked.

Rubbed my eyes.

I blinked again. And slowly realized there were comments. And I was really happy to find out there was comments from people other than friends of mine in real life (not that internet friends aren't real, but seeing comments from people over the internet is so great).

Now I know some of you who read this will be thinking I am crazy for being so happy someone left a comment on my blog, but it really is a milestone in the blogosphere.

Think back to when you received your first comments from people on your blog. It's pretty exciting!

So I wanted to take the time today to tell keshi and rodrigo how much I appreciate their comments.

And, for the sake of drumming up traffic, if you liked my past posts, please tell your friends to swing by as well (there's always time to make a shameless plug for my blog. :P).

Everyone is welcome in The Pumpkin Patch!

So to end this post, I leave you with my personal thank you to keshi and rodrigo, you both have made my day a happy one, even this early in the morning for me.

Thanks again!

Friends

We all have people we trust, people we hang out with, people we confide in, people we laugh with, and people we cry with.

We all have friends.

Friends are the glue that hold us together every day. Friends can make you smile when you are having the worst day of your life. Friends are a comforting, familiar face, in a crowded room full of strangers. Friends, for the most part, are the people you are proud of the most, the ones who you would tell other people "I know that guy."

I have quite a few people I would call friends. I even have a few I would call best friends. and I also have far too many people I call acquaintances.

But let's break it down a little bit.

Acquaintances - people I know, would say hello to, nod at, stop and shoot the breeze with. People I may remember a few key things about their life, and 75% of the time, I would remember their name.
These are the people who you say you know, if someone ask you if you know them. "Yeah I know Vinny, he's a hell of a guy." But really, that's about as in depth as it would get. I have no idea whether Vinny is, in fact, a hell of a guy, but that's what I would tell people.

Friends - Friends are there for you. Friends are the ones you see often. And if they live out of town, you email, phone, or see them when they are back in town for the holidays. But, even if you miss the when they are back in town, a simple "sorry, I got really busy" would suffice for a friend. They understand you enough to not ask too many questions, and take what you are saying at face value.
Friends are the ones you will go out to the bars with, or out to a movie. Friends are the ones who will sell the Social tickets for your wedding, and make sure all of their friends come, because they have all gone to their friends' socials in the past.
Friends are the ones you would pick for your hockey team, or maybe plan a small road trip with.

Best Friends - Best friends are the ones who will be there no matter what. You break up with your significant other - they are there for you. Someone in your family dies, they are the shoulder to cry on. You need a few bucks to tide you over, they are the ones opening their wallets (this one is sketchy though, not all best friends, or friends for that matter, should lend out cash in my opinion. It can lead to ex-best friends).
Best friends will stay by your side, even though they know you may have done something morally wrong. They will not condone this behavior, but have such strong bonds to you, they will not leave your side.

I think one tends to gravitate to those who are like ones self. We make acquaintances with those who share common interests, or know the same people.
This is very easy to do, because there's always somewhere to find potential acquaintances. Work, school, online web sites, you can find a new acquaintance without trying very hard.
The question then, becomes how do you, if at all, turn and acquaintance into a friend. Do you need more friends? Will this acquaintance be a good addition to your group of friends? Would you feel embarrassed if you were seen hanging around with this new person? All questions which run through your mind as you make new acquaintances.

It's a tough road at this point, whether to bring that new person into your life. You don't really know what the result will be if unless you take a chance.

It's the same with life and love though. If you don't take the chance, you will never know what could have been. Such is the premise for many a song and movie.

Next time you are walking down the street and pass by someone you don't know, stop for a moment and think about that person. You don't know them, but what if you did? What would it take to start up a conversation with that person, and get to know them a little. How would that tiny conversation change your life? Or would it at all? What if that's the person you're supposed to marry? What's if that's your next new best friend?

The point is, you never know. And you never will until you make that first move.

So go make a new acquaintance, and see if you can parle that into a friendship.

The Inner Geek

It's been a busy week since I last posted. Singing rehearsals and performance, recording for a new album, my second ever LAN party, lots to do at work and.......ok hold on a second.....did I say LAN party?

Well I suppose I did!

Yup, I have now been to two, count 'em, two LAN parties in my whole lifetime. Both of which were this year, within the last month.
It sounds strange to me, someone in their thirties, to say the phrase "LAN party" without giggling a little. I somehow picture teenagers going to a party and playing video games all day, with their moms outside on the deck in the backyard having a few wobbly pops.
But then again, people nowadays seem to be embracing their inner geek. I guess I can as well without fear of reprisal. Well, not much anyway. There are certainly a lot of geek types where I work, so there should be no problems there.
Now my neighbors on the other hand, well they would make fun of me for sure.

They believe in cars, music, and chicks.

Hold on a sec.....that sounds pretty good. Like you could picture a car, with a chick in it, and some loud music playing from it. Yeah, that's pretty sweet!

Alright, I can definitely see the merit in their side of this. After all, I am a maple leaf carrying Canadian, I know how to drink and whore around with the best of 'em!
But I also can stay at home every once in a while and hone my video playing acuity. You have to hone, you gotta! You gotta keep your trigger finger strong, and sensitive. You need to practice all the time, lest your hand cramp up in the middle of a crazy fire fight! Or you come face to face with your nemesis online, and bam, he takes you down in PK glory...tea bagging his way into legend on your face!

Yeah, sometimes it's a fine line between having geek tendencies, and going all the way geek. Going geek happen to all kinds of people, and it's not always something you can see coming, or avoid for that matter.
A few extra minutes on the computer each night. Choosing to surf or troll the boards instead of watching tv.
God forbid you ever lose your girlfriend, because that's the time when you are most at risk of going geek. Too much time on your hands, more money in your pocket......maybe a few too many visits to the local game store?! Huh?!
Yup, and just like that....SHAAAA-BAM, you got a new game on the front seat next to you. You look over at it several times as you drive home, eagerly thinking of how cool it will be to play it.
You might even contemplate opening the game while driving home, yeah. Maybe you could gain a few insights into the game-play of this title prior to even installing it! Yeah, You could be a pro within a few hours if you got a jump start.

Wow, that was too real for me! I think that happened to me a month or so ago.

Wait, did I hit geek already??? No, I went to a wedding social 2 weekends ago, I'm safe. And as I recall, I drank heavily, and hit on a few women. Yes, I have staved off catching geek for the time being.
The problem is, geek is always knocking on my door. Geek is constantly trying to get me to play for his team.
Geek may be an influence in my life, and if geek were a town, I would say I do know the route to get there, and have to admit to visiting it now and then.
But I don't live in geek. Some of my friends do, but I just like visiting once in a while.

So, in the end, really nothing to be ashamed of people.

Embrace Your Inner Geek!
